Math's Impact on Salary
by Todd Smitherman on 07/09/11
There's an interesting article posted on Yahoo entitled "The College Degrees You Should Have Gotten" written by Investopedia. The top five spots are held by fields in engineering then the next three are applied mathematics, physics, and economics. These top eight fields have one glaring aspect in common... strong math skills.
Now no one knows if their child will follow one of these career paths or not. There calling could be less math demanding and heavier in the personal touch arena. Either way, equipping our children to understand basic math, accomplish each step of math in the school ladder, and understand how to balance a budget as an adult is every parent's desire. Along the way, hopefully the math they learn will add some extra understanding of truth to their repertoire... 1 + 1 will always equal 2.

Vacations
by Todd Smitherman on 06/18/11
When on vacation, the last consideration is with reading or practicing math facts; but it can also become a great diversion from the days activities. For example, if at the beach, the hottest time of the day (12pm to 3pm) is a great time for younger children to come inside, eat lunch, rest, and have a quiet time. Instead of tv, movies, or video games, pull out some math worksheets.
Wherever your vacation takes your family, a quick diversion from the main activities will continue to enrich your child and provide good family rest breaks.
Start off slow
by Todd Smitherman on 05/23/11When your child begins using the worksheets, set the time limit on the upper range (around 7 minutes). In the short run, you lessen the stress your child may experience with not achieving a faster time goal yet in the long run, your child receives the benefit of looking back at not only how their speed has improved but also their higher completion ratio.
Summer is here!!

School is almost over for many elementary students. Yippee!
It's a great time to rest and re-energize after a long school year. Play outdoors, swim, visit family, or sleep late; just remember to keep those math skills sharp as the new school year will sneak up on you!
A Summer to Share
by Todd Smitherman on 03/08/11
Before we know it, summer will be knocking on our door. Wait, wasn't it just snowing here in Atlanta? Yes and that was two months ago...
So today's blog asks the question, "How much time will your child spend reading, practicing spelling, and solving math problems this summer?" For most parents, reading is the easy and natural activity; we grew up with it. Yet the other two items also need a suitable balance of time.
